7 Must-Have Items for a Successful Moving Day

May 16, 2023 by Amy Slenker-Smith 8 Comments

movingIt’s Moving Day! You arrived at the new house. How exciting!

The movers delivered all the boxes and you’re ready to start unpacking. But someone is asking for toilet paper and the kids spilled a drink and can’t find the paper towels. Now they want snacks!

So, instead of unpacking, you run to the store. Maybe you return to realize you need a screwdriver, step ladder, and batteries. And now you are wondering, what else have you forgotten?

What if instead of digging through boxes, you had all these items at your fingertips?

If this sounds like a better plan, then keep reading.

7 Must-Have Items

  1. Small Suitcase –  Each family member should pretend they are packing for a weekend trip. Don’t forget toiletries and medicine.
  2. Backpack/Computer Bag – Pack your laptop, tablet, chargers, and any important documents related to the house sale, purchase, or move.
  3. Paper Towels, Toilet paper, and Garbage bags
  4. Box Cutter  & Small Tool Box – A box cutter will help you quickly and safely open boxes.
  5. Small Notebook, Post-Its, Sharpie, and Pen – I use Post-It Notes to label kitchen cabinets before I start unpacking. It helps to plan the space properly and visualize where things will go. Also, it allows others to help set up this space in a neat and organized fashion.
  6. Pet Food and Pet Dishes – Don’t forget Fluffy! Make sure you have your pet’s food, treats, leash, beds, toys, and litter box. Get pets set up with familiar items to help them adjust and ensure no messes in your new home.
  7. Coffee Pot, Filters, and Coffee – Start your first morning off right with your favorite beverage.

These are all excellent tips for making a stressful time much less stressful. I love the idea of having the coffee pot and coffee easily accessible. Pack the coffee filters, scoop, and favorite mugs too.

If you plan to sleep in your house that first night, it would be great to set pack bedding that each family member will need (pillows, blankets, and sheets.)

Thanks Linda – GREAT point about the coffee filters, scoop, and mugs. Spoiler alert…..bedding (and much more!) is a part of the comprehensive list if you download it.

Great tips. Although I can do without items 6 (no pets) and 7 (not a coffee drinker), I’d need to add a shower curtain (and towels). Moving is sweaty, dirty work, and even if the movers DID do everything, you’d at least want to take a shower the next morning, and showering without a shower curtain can not only flood the bathroom but soak all those nice rolls of toilet paper you remembered to bring. 😉

LOL as I imagine all the toilet paper soaking up the floor! I think your #7 might be a Tea kettle and Tea. 🙂

Great list. We provide clients with large heavy-duty. Lear bags to toss their bed linens in, if they are sleeping in their long home one night and their new home the next – local move. That ways the bed linens are clearly identifiable and they can make the bed as soon as the movers put the beds together.
